Thurs. Oct. 28th 2010 Cuba Missouri

Join us as we travel North America in our Holiday Rambler Vacationer,
 since August 2006

A beautiful sunny morning after a great nights sleep. Cool fall air but we are toasty warm and relaxed. After computing for a bit and coffee we hopped in the car and went for a nice leisurely drive along the Historic Route 66 into Cuba Missouri. Population 3,200. Also known as the Mural City. Now in the past few years we have travelled various sections of this Historic Route 66 that began in 1926 and was the Mother Road across America from Chicago to Los Angeles. Many towns, villages and businesses prospered until the the interstate highway system provided better, safer and faster roads to travel (thou less scenic) and many of these businesses closed down.

We passed the Missouri Hick BBQ a newer but unique looking restaurant, then the Wagon Wheel Motel that prospered from 1934 to present day when new owners began major renovations and upgrades to the buildings in 2009. Driving thru the town all the beautiful murals were obvious depicting the heyday of days gone by. About 4 miles west of Cuba we came upon the 66 Outpost in Fanning Missouri, boasting the Worlds Largest Rocker and a very interesting and unique gift shop.

After this we turned around and stopped at the smallest Walmart we have ever seen to pick up a few items that they did not have so,  then back to camp. To putter about and even sit in the sunshine with a book for a while. Eventually time for supper, I whipped up some of our garlic sausage in a jar, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and peas for supper, then read bit bit more and a tv show.

  1. Thanks for the history lesson. I went over this with Jordan. It was interesting to read because one of her favourite movies is CARS and it talks about Route 66 and how the highway was diverted leaving local businesses in ruin. Route 66 became the "forgotten highway".
